Description

Among youngsters in the Netherlands - despite different policy interventions - migrant girls from less wealthy families are the ones who less often participate in sports on a structural basis. Sports are of great importance for learning norms and values, social participation as well as health. In addition, young people who live in poverty indicate themselves as ‘different’ than others for not being able to participate in sports and other activities. The aim of this research is to clarify the interplay between well known barriers such as shame, insecurity, money, the accessibility of sports places and time, that keeps teenage girls in the Netherlands with a migration background who live in poverty, from participating in sprots on a structural basis.

Data collection will take place through at least twelve open, narrative interviews, with both teenage girls and their parents. In the interviews, by using different creative conversation techniques, more than just sports will be discussed, in order to get a broader insight in the girls lives. The data will be analysed by both thematic and narrative analysis.

The results will provide a better understanding in the complexity of living in poverty and not participating in sports on a structural basis. By clarifying the interplay between different barriers, new solutions as well as new policy interventions can be created to enable teenage girls in the Netherlands with a migration background who live in poverty to participate structurally in sports.
