Description

Despite all the advancements in the healthcare sector, slow wound healing is a major concern, particularly for diabetic patients. There has been a lot of practices for diabetic wound healing, however, without much success for complete healing process, mostly due to poor cell proliferation, communications and wound infections. Here, we have addressed these challenges by employing hydrogel based microneedle patches loaded with oxygen releasing nanoparticles. Calcium peroxide (CPO) has been used as a reactive oxygen species (ROS), that was incorporated with Gelatin methacrylate (GelMA), which has been proven to be cell friendly for numerous tissue engineering applications. Such microneedles are tip loaded, meaning the tip of the microneedle is loaded with GelMa and CPO, while the backing layer is solely composed of GelMa. This strategy enables us to avoid any excess release of oxygen from the backing layer itself which is noncytotoxic and biocompatible. We demonstrated that CPO loaded microneedle patches show enhanced proliferation with fibroblast and keratinocyte cell lines.
