Description
We investigate the oscillations of a stiff longitudinally elastic double pendulum. The model is motivated by the oscillations of a tethered satellite system with negligible bending stiffness, where we expected, that the fast longitudinal oscillations have no significant influence on the slow transversal swingings. Numerical simulations show that even for very stiff pendula a significant amount of the energy is transferred to the longitudinal oscillations leading to irregular system behavior.
In this talk, we investigate how a periodic oscillation of a rigid double pendulum looses stability by decreasing the longitudinal stiffness and how the method of adiabatic invariants can be applied to correctly approximate the system behaviour.
