Description

In this study, the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method is used for modeling and simulating the solid-state deposition process, friction surfacing (FS), involving severe plastic deformation at elevated temperatures. To address the high computational cost of SPH, a GPU-based framework was developed with additional enhancement techniques such as particle switching and subdomain decomposition to further reduce the computational time. Moreover, to ensure the stability of the model, artificial viscosity and artificial stress are incorporated into the framework. The model was validated against experimental data and successfully captured key features of the FS process, including the formation of rod flash and the deposition profile. The simulation provides valuable insights into the deposition mechanism, specifically the material flow from the rod to the deposition and the distribution of rod material within the deposition.
