Description
Isometric deformations of elastic thin plates are very rigid. Folds enable increased flexibility of elastic deformations. We ask for optimal fold-patterns on an elastic thin plate that minimize some cost of the resulting deformation subject to suitable boundary conditions. To approximate the elastic deformation for given fold-pattern and the optimization problem, we will take into account a phase field model of Ambrosio–Tortorelli-type. We show results of the forward simulation and the PDE-constrained optimization problem for different forces, boundary conditions, and cost functionals. This is joint work with Martin Rumpf.
